Some Reasons Why Women Make Excellent Transcriptionists

At Etranscriber.net Transcription services, most of our workforce comprises of female transcriptionists. We asked one of our lady transcriber Jenna Huang on her opinions on this. And also who would make better transcribers? Females or males? Without making the topic too female-centric or a gender vs. gender topic, we asked her some questions on the same. Here are questions that we asked Jenna during the interview.

1. We asked Jenna,  "Do females make better transcribers than male transcribers?" She replies, "Well there are lots of facts to support this. Firstly, females have better listening skills. Now listening skills are important when you have to 'listen' to hours of audio files such as a conferences or a focus group or webinars. In a medical transcription company or in a general transcription company you are required to listen to hours of audio. This is your job. And we never get bored with it."

2. Then we asked Jenna, what makes them better suited for transcription jobs? She replies, "Well I will answer this question from an employers perspective. It is generally seen that women workface have lower attrition rates. Though it may not be the case in every company but it is definitely so at our workplace. Another excellent thing about the population mix here at our company is that candidates from all experiences are given an opportunity. This not only includes fresh pass outs from medical transcription colleges but also housewives who would like to work from the comforts of their homes. So female candidates from all ages can work here regardless of their location or age. On the other hand male candidates might not prefer working from home. And also fewer and fewer male transcribers are picking up this career choice. So I feel female transcribers definitely make a better workforce for any transcription company whether it is a general transcription or legal transcription service. "

3. What could be reason for such a skew in workforce population? Huang says, "Well if you are look at the current career choices in the outsourcing industry, certain service especially secretarial and virtual administrative jobs, these are much favored by women as opposed to men. This is evident from the fact that more than 75 percent of the graduates passing out of transcription service colleges in Philippines, India, USA and Canada, comprise of females and women. Then if you look at other career option such as computer sciences, programming and coding, engineering services, Arts, Business administration courses, Commerce etc. then men prefer these over a transcription career.

4. Second last question. We asked Jenna, "Currently we are seeing many women progressing on to executive level positions including C-suites. This career level progression is also being seeing the secretarial outsourcing industry where more and more women are becoming managers, CEOs, and becoming board members. Do you see the trend continue in the future?"  Huang says "Not only this, I know many people in my line who started working as a transcriptionist moved on to the career ladder within a short span of time i.e. 2-3 years. As this is a female dominated industry when looking from the workforce perspective , then doesn't it make sense that females would make better managers and CEO's too?"

5. Last question. We asked Jenna Huang if you had to identify top 8 trends from the transcription industry then what would those be? Here are top 8 predictions from the transcription industry that Jenna's sees happening in the next 3-5 years.

1. Woman will continue to form the majority work force in typing and secretarial service industry.
2. More and more automation will happen in medical transcription.
3. General transcription services will likely remain
4. Legal transcription services will gain more importance and will be looked on par with medical transcription.
5. More and more outsourcing to countries such as Philippines, India is likely to be seen in future.
6. Transcription service wages will increase by 20-30 percent.
7. Transcribing rates per minute will remain more or less the same as what they are now.
8. Academic level transcription such as dissertation and thesis transcription could become a tad bit cheaper for students and lecturers. However this again will vary from company to company.
