If Work Becomes Monotonous Then Follow These Steps

At Etranscriber.net (a online transcriber service) we have to transcribe several hour of speech into text every day as part of our job. This means our team of transcriptionists sits hours on end to when typing out a file. There are several times when the job become monotonous. So we interviewed one of our team members is George Huang and asked him how we personally manages long sessions at work.

George, as an  US Based IT professional with several years experience in online interview transcription on his resume. He gave us some tips on how he takes frequent breaks at works to refresh himself.

Work in Small Batches of Time.

I work continuously for 75 minutes then take a break of 15 minutes.
Do stretching exercise once a day. So I do simple stretching exercises that does not seem offensive. Like stretching my arms in all possible directions, bending down, talking a walk on the stairs. I have also kept a squeeze ball in my table. Whenever my wrists and arms feel a little lethargic I use the magic squeeze ball.

  1. Remember taking frequent breaks of small duration is the 'Key.
  2. Listen to a new genre of song in one of your breaks.
  3. Read a SMS joke or a show a meme to your colleague:
  4. Bring a newspaper to work: I always bring a newspaper to work. I do not have the time to finish it fully. But what I do go over it and give it a glance every now and then. It just keeps me going. Just glancing over the newspaper images refreshes the mind.
  5. Work on your hobby while at work: I have a pin board on my cabin wall. So I keep putting up motivation posters, quotes on the wall and keep replacing the old ones. So this keeps me busy too.
  6. Social Media: I kept the best for last. And this does not need any mention. If I need a refreshment I just check my Facebook page or post something on Twitter or Tumblr. These days I am writing content for my company's blog which you will online in a few weeks time.

George shares with us "Lots of companies are now thinking of employee satisfaction. Fighting monotonous work is one area they are particular interested in. Google and Facebook offices among tech industry space are good examples"

At Etranscriber.net we are planning on following the same route. Currently we are working on dedicating a separate area in the office where our team can take a break, relax themselves and even take a quick nap if they want one.
